Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Define elder abuse and understand the impact of ageism on elder abuse.

  • Identify the various forms (financial, physical, sexual, psychological and neglect) and indicators of elder abuse.

  • Describe the intersectionality of risk factors that predispose older adults to elder abuse.

  • Outline the legal obligations for reporting and relevant Canadian laws and legislation in Ontario.

  • Understand community response models and the benefits of interdisciplinary and case consultation teams in responding to elder abuse.

  • Identify provincial organizations and community services and their role in supporting/responding older adults vulnerable or experiencing elder abuse.

  • Describe systemic challenges and barriers to navigating and accessing support services in Ontario.

  • Identify prevention approaches and the importance of education in the prevention of elder abuse.

  • Understand the importance of social change campaigns in shifting the public's attitude of aging and elder abuse and its influence on policy and practice.

What you will learn

Students will learn about elder abuse and neglect through interactive discussions, case discussions, videos, and group activities. Students will gain insight of the various forms of elder abuse, intersectionality of risk factors and the impact of abuse on the health and well-being of older adults. Canadian laws and Ontario’s legislation related to elder abuse and reporting will be reviewed as well as barrier to reporting. Elder abuse strategies to prevent violence and abuse of older people and awareness campaigns aimed at creating social change to shift the public's attitude and social norms to value older people and the different experiences of aging will also be explored. The course will provide students the opportunity to learn about community-based approaches and system navigation of provincial and local community services/resources to support older adults who are at-risk or experiencing elder abuse.
